Columnar apple advise

Hello all,
I have a columnar apple, planted last year. It got apple canker mid trunk. Thank you all who helped me identify the disease. It got bad looking, so I cut 2/3 of it off. Now it is a nub with a few fruit spurs on it. Is it doomed? Will it some how grow again? I thought cutting a columnar tree was a bad idea, but it needed it. Any advise!
