I have now 4 peach trees

Hi

I got 4 peach tree varieties Glo haven, Red Haven, Baby gold 6 and Royal Pride. If someone remember me i still try to grow peaches. My White Lady peach which i had and asked here why it didn't do anything i founded on internet it had bacterial canker because i saw red dot on it and saw same kind of dot on image of peaches and also description matched quite well to that tree. I can't be sure but i think it was it, because tree was dead. I don't have that tree any more.

I think i don't know much about growing peaches. Those peach trees which i got are bare root. I have never grow bare root fruit trees before. I got them without leaves. No leaves at all any of them. I searched internet about peaches and found that bare root should be planted without leaves. I am little worried about my peach trees are they alive? Can someone give me some hope that my peach trees are O.K.? I have my peach trees in box which i got them, not in light. I have read my peach book peach. World Cultivars to Marketing 4th edition said peaches should be in water 12-24 hours before planting. I put them in water for 24 hours but nothing happened, i think they didn't took much water. I have read here that peaches don't like water so i took them out of water (waterlogging).

I have tried to read my book about peach planting. First i didn't understand much about it, it had words i didn't understood much. I read second time and understood quite well (not all, but most of it) after thinking little bit of it. I also looked this site about peach planting : http://www.acnursery.com/acn_planting.php . They say peaches should pruned to 30 inches, which is about 75 cm. It looks like my peach trees has already in nursery pruned cut those branches, as they are small. They are some of my peach trees (i don't remember now which one of my peach trees.) like after image in that site. I meant that part where leaves was growing was cut back to trunk, so it is only small in size in now.

BTW i think i might know why my peach trees which i had have died. I found this internet site :

http://www.clemson.edu/extension/peach/faq/what_problems_can_result_if_a_peach_tree_is_planted_too_deep.html .

That site says planting too deep can kill tree. I think my peaches have not died in winter, i never think that was reason for dying. First image is somewhat like my tree. I have read graft union to be 2 inches above soil, that is 5 cm above soil. I think i planted my previous peaches deeper, i think some 75 cm deep. I guess that killed them. We don't have much growing information about peaches here which say about planting depth, so how i know.

My peach trees are in garden now and Glo haven graft union is 10 cm above soil, Red Haven is 9 cm above soil, Babygold 6 5 cm above soil, Royal Pride is 18 cm above soil. I measured it from where the trunk is different from bottom and up from there. I think that is where the variety was grafted. Royal pride graft height was higher than other peach trees, i think i planted it about same depth. How important that tree height is? My Glo Haven and Red Heaven trees are over that height, they are 100 cm. I hesitate to cut them, as i don't know if they are alive.

Does someone know how bare root peach trees or when they break they dormancy? I found on internet that they need light to break dormancy. My peach trees are now in garden, do they now break dormancy? How long it takes? Any information about this?

Hi Dennis! Its Mrs. G. Glad you're still trying to grow peaches! After you plant your trees you should start seeing small green leaves in about two weeks. I never soak mine in water. I just trim the roots, plant them, water them then prune the tops. If there is no rain predicted, I will give each tree one gallon of water every one to two days until I see green leaves and growth. MrsG47 hi

I remember you. I try to grow peaches, peaches are good tasting fruit. Good to see it takes 2 weeks to see leaves. My peach trees don't have leaves, which don't look so good to me but good to know it takes that time. I guess it just take some time to get leaves. Did you plant your peach tree without leaves, if you had it bare root? I gave 4 litres water to each peach tree when planted, which is about 1 gallon (U.S.A. gallon). You said you pruned tops, what you mean by that? You pruned your peach tree to 75 cm or what? So i should give 1 gallon water in 2 days until i see leaves that you advice if no rain? Did that work for you?

Yes, Dennis watering a newly planted tree is very good. Do not let the tree 'sit' in water though. You must have good drainage. I just clipped the top of the branches after it was planted. Only about two or three inches on each small branch. I then sprayed it with fungicide and pesticide. Do not forget that you'll need to spray it with copper starting next November. Mrs. G :)

    Dear Dennis,

I admitted I read your post a few times trying to understand what you meant re. your bareroot peach trees.

It sounds like you bought 4 bareroot peach trees, kept them in a box for a while, put them in water for 24 hrs and took them out and later planted in the ground.

Yes, a bare tree has no leaves. It's in a state of dormancy. In general, you should plant bareroot trees as soon as they arrive. However, If you could keep them dormant in a cold, dark place with their roots moist, they should stay dormant and be OK for several weeks before planting.

As for soaking bare root trees in water, some nurseries suggested anywhere between 1-4 hours. 24 hours are quite a lot. Don't know if one can kills bareroot trees that way or not, probably not. I have planted my tree without soaking in water and with soaking. They are all alive and well.

It's OK that the graft unions of all your trees are at different height above ground. It should not make much different. I have mind at different height above ground, too.

If your trees have been in the ground for 2 weeks or more, you should see some buds pushing along the trunks. If you don't see anything after 3 weeks, you may want to scratch the bark of your trees to see if cambium is green or brown. If the cambium is green, your trees are alive. They may take longer time to push growth.

There are many good YouTube videos about pruning peach trees. I attached this one done by North Carolina State U. The instructor makes it easy to understand.

Your My Page said you live in the US but if I recall, you are somewhere in Europe, right?

Here is a link that might be useful: Pruning bareroot peach trees

    MrsG47 hi

Now you said you clipped the top of branches,, where the leaves are. I thought you earlier meant cutting tree height. So you prunned your peach tree branches smaller like in my peach trees. You said need to spray copper, for peach leaf curl you mean?

    Mamuang hi

You got it right. O.K. to know different graft union height from ground is O.K. That 2 week time to wait to see leaves to appear was told earlier, so it takes little bit time to happen. I live in europe.

When I first plant any tree, not only do I clip the roots. After the tree is planted I trim off the tips of the branches, or remove branches I do not want. And yes the copper is for Peach leaf curl. I spray it once in Nov. then end of Feb. finally in April. I have never had a problem with Peach Leaf Curl. Mrs. G
