Do bag worms hurt fruit trees?

I had a nest of the bag worms up in my 6 year old apple tree. I didn't bother trying to remove them cause it didn't sound like they do any damage according to the TV news.

Now the trees leaves look all munched up. It may be something else that ate the leaves. I had some worms in another apple tree and it is fine, so I'm not sure.

What is the bottom line on these worms and fruit trees?
