Scion take or new branch?

I used the "Plugger" to try to graft onto my old pear tree last year. I didn't think any of them took, but this week I noticed a little sprout coming from underneath one of the grafts. Is there any way to tell if this is a scion take or if the tree put out a new branch where the scion was grafted. (The yellow stuff is grafting seal).

This shoot is not growing out from the scion you added - the growth from the scion would be from one of the buds on it so will be coming right out of it. The base of this shoot is below the scion. The damage to the bark made a spot where adventitious buds could form on your pear. Let that shoot grow and you can bud on it this fall or graft on it next spring.

Agree with Scott,
You can also tell by comparing the leafs with other other watersprouts.
If you would take our advise from last year and graft to branches/water
sprouts you might be ahead. Plugs hardly ever take.
