Feijoa (pineapple guava) fruits going strange

We've got a large feijoa that's about 20 year old and has generally had pretty good crops. However, this year about half the fruit has problems; they look fine on the outside, but inside the fruit pulp has empty channels about 3mm wide going up and down, and the pulp is hard and pretty tasteless.

I've read that the variety Robert can have hollow fruits that look like the others on the outside if it gets insufficient pollen.

I see a number of those problem fruits every year, they don't fully fill out and remain hard inside with internal fissures and brownish, leathery pulp areas. A late bloom or an early freeze make this problem worse. It could well be a pollination issue.
