You just never know what an untrained fruit tree grower will do. The picture is a second year leaf of a Goldrush apple grafted on a pear. Last year it was slow to start but really took off about mid-season and as a result went almost straight up. After reading about the benefits of limb spreading I attempt a splint while it was dormant. The problem is that a limb will only bend so much before it breaks. Panic sets in and I do what anyone would do after creating a mess. I carefully put on a brace at the angle desired and to my surprise it appears to be healing. Sometime we are just lucky.

I had Bartlett grafted to my wild apple tree and it grew two one foot branches last year. I also put honey crisp on it. This spring half the tree has fire blight and killed all my grafts and the big limb of the tree. It was so healthy last year. Good luck with your pears. I have granny smith grafts that grew three foot that I want to bend over but I'm not as brave as you. I'm now training the laterals to bend downward that are growing off of it this year. They all wanted to grow straight up right against the main three foot leader.

Johnny. It is good know others enjoy cross grafting apples and pears. This is the first year assuming nothing bad happens that I will be able to ripen Hood pears on an apple tree and Mollie apples on a pear tree. I am trying hard to learn from my mistakes an also learn from the vast knowledge the other posters have. If there is one thing that I have done right is selecting fireblight resistant pears such as Ayers, Orient, and Moonglow. Bartlett usually dies here as soon as it starts to bloom. It is a great tasting pear but not suitable for areas that are prone to fireblight. Good Luck, Bill
