Should I spray?

Posted by goudreau Me 5b (My Page) on

It has been 8 days since my last application of Surround.
Its gonna be a nice day here today in midcoastal Maine but the next 2 days are suppose to be heavy rains. Should I still spray the Surround today, as planned, or should I hold off till the end of the week?

Thanks for your help,

RE: Should I spray?

Wait, 8 days is not that long ago. Surround is not applied on any sort of regular schedule, you keep an eye on the trees and when coverage gets thin and no big drench is about to come you re-apply. Sometimes you need to re-apply even when rains are coming because the coverage has gotten very thin. Fortunately most years that is not needed. Keep track of inches of rain to help gauge how much you lost, its closely tied to how much it rained.

RE: Should I spray?

I will wait to the end of the week.

From what I have researched, the rough schedule they say to spray about once a week for four weeks after petal drop.

RE: Should I spray?

I am with scott. There is no "schedule". You build a coating with 2-4 applications allowing each to dry before the next.....a lot like paint. Then you are pretty much good to go until rain or fruit growth cause the coating to get thin.

I go by how white the tree...when dry. It can look like you have lost the coating while it is still wet from a rain.

Some years I spray very little (warm and dry) some years like this I find myself spraying very often...and sometimes right before a possible rain...because no coverage=no protection. And it only takes a bad night or two (warm temps poor coverage) to really put a hit in the crop
