The light colored leaves are supposed to be EMLA 26. The dark colored leaves are a dwarf of either M26 or M9 from Stark. I'm assuming the one labeled M26 is correct. What is your opinion of the dark colored sprout (M9)?

Sprout from Stark that they said was M26 or M9. This is important to me but apparently not to Stark.

In my experience (though some what limited) that red stemmed, with the new leaves showing red coloration is a Bud line of rootsock. Such as Bud9, etc..

TruCre. Thanks, I was hoping that it was the Bud9. The other one was labeled Jonagold with M26 and came from a seller that I trust. Any other opinions are welcome.

I'm not expert enough to know from sight. There is an interesting summary of root stocks though if you like to read it. My brother-in-law planted a lot of M9 or M26 trees 20 years ago but planted them too deep so that the hybrid cultivar grafted on rooted too. However they do very well although because of the soil being poor red clay that caused some trees to spread shallow roots and 'bow' at a 45 degree angle in some cases rather than deep roots as there is often hidden sheets of limestone and sandstone and very big rocks of them hidden to blocking deeper growth of the roots in this area.

AgroCoders. Thanks for the link. It was informative reading.

Bud 9 has reddish leaves, pink wood, red blossoms, and red fruit.

The growth that's came up from my M26 had no red or red veining in the leaves so FWIW, if I had to guess, I agree with the others, it's probably Bud9. Just curious...why was you hoping that? Also FWIW, and really not directly related, but a lot of seedlings (not all, maybe -25%) I've had come up DID have red coloring on both stem tissue and in the leaf veins.

That's a great technique to produce root stock 2010ChampsBCS.

Dwarf -> M26 or M9 Semi -> M7 or B118 That's what I was told when I talked to Stark earlier this year when I questioned what RS is under their trees. I'm claiming zero authority so take it for what it's worth. It would be a sad day if stark can't even give the correct range of rootstock. I would suspect they aren't that inept, though. I hope, anyway. ps. glad to see the stooling bed has succeeded! I'm trying that myself testing a few different things. Hoping to have the same results as you!

Appleseed70. Why I was hoping it was Bud9? I was going to graft some long Bud9 interstems (nothing new). I have been fascinated with interstem grafts for 25 years after seeing it applied by Stark Brothers. Strong roots combined with size control.

Kbk00. Looks like my dwarf ended up being neither of the two options that I was told. The stool bed root system is better developed now and I anticipate more clones next year.

ClarkinKS. Thanks, I plan to expand and do a few more clones next year.
