What's chewing on my peach/plum trees and killing them?

Of the 20+ trees I bought this year, the two that I was most looking forward to have been chewed on by some animal - Both China Pearl, and Imperial Epineuse have been damaged. The chew marks indicate pointed teeth, leaving splintered wood and broken trunks. Here is what is left of the Imperial Epineuse plum . . .

Do you know what is chewing on my trees and killing them? Do you think if I plant this section, even if the grafted rootstock is gone, that it might survive? I might be able to find the root ball somewhere else in the yard and tape them back together if that helps. ;-)

I wish I had a remote for the collar. But it is just a proximity control that doesn't allow her to get too far from the base station. She used to chase deer all over the neighborhood, including through multiple other neighbors' yards. So I had to limit her range unfortunately. She is one incredibly fast dog. I have watched her chase deer down the road a hundred yards and not lose one single step on it. Of course, with her high strung hi energy level comes a propensity to get in trouble, including chewing anything she can get ahold of. Pick your poison I guess.

At least I don't see deer in my yard nearly as often as I use to. I would say not even 1/100th as much.
