Scabby apple bark

Any idea what this is? Fireblight?

The apples that came with my house are a mess and two of the four trees have spots like this all over them. I'm not worried so much about the long term health of these trees as much as I'm concerned that they are a source of disease for the pears I want to put in next spring. Any thoughts, advice or clarifying questions about this are welcome.

Those are burr knots. It's the tree trying to push out roots but the roots don't form above ground. If you mounded soil over the knots they'd root. It's nothing to worry about with regards to your apples or pears.

That is excellent news. Thanks! Now to get that tree and its neighbor cleaned up. It is certainly a vigorous tree and has formed a thicket of waterspouts upon waterspouts.
