Prune plum or wait??

I have a plum that is finally going to go in the ground soon. I've been waiting for a large tree to be cut down in my yard and I finally have the planting area available. The new plum is in need of pruning but I'm not sure if I should just wait to prune it and just let it get established this year. Appreciate any advice.
