Pests...In Particular Japanese Beetles

I have 4 fruit trees planted - 2 Japanese plums, 1 peach, and 1 Asian pear. What I have noticed as of late is the foliage on my trees is being removed by small beetles. Based on some things I've read, my first thought is that these beetles are the infamous Japanese variety.

I've also noticed that the amount of damage is varied by each tree. My J. plums have the worst damage with my Shiro looking by far the worst. My Satsuma has a good amount of damage as well but on a much lower level. My peach tree has a very small amount of damage as I last seen it. But my Asian pear tree looks completely unaffected. Do these bugs not like Asian pear tree leaves or have I just been lucky?

Also, what method do you personally use to control the J. beetles? I've read that applying Neem oil is good as well as manually knocking them into a container of soapy water. I am not sure if Neem oil will have an effect on the fruit when my trees are at an age for bearing.
