Borers in cherry tree

I posted about my Stella tree the other day, fatally afflicted as it is with canker and borers. I had assumed they were the usual peach borers, but on closer examination, I discover that they are in fact flat-headed borers.

But what kind? And what other of my trees are they likely to attack next, and how can I protect them? Other than cutting down the affected tree before the adults whatever they are, can emerge.

We've had beech borers and emerald ash borers here, but do either of those attack cherries?

Itilton; Don't know if it's what you're dealing with, but do a search on "Shot Hole Borer" and see if anything there looks like what you have going on. Apparently they attack weakened trees.

I'm so worried about borers that I trunk drench my peach and cherry trees probably more than I should - but man I hate the thought of dealing with borers.

No, it's a different creature, although apparently the larva of a beetle. Like the flathead apple borer. Very ugly, sizeable wormy thing.

Apparently drenches work on some sorts of borers, not on others.
