What is biting off my blueberry canes?

Posted by tilly_girl OH (My Page) on

Something is biting off my blueberry canes. I have plenty of netting on them that nothing should be able to get through. But, again this morning there was a branch sniped off...it is a clean cut, it has not been chewed off. I cannot believe that an animal could reach that far back into the netting. I also have the netting anchored into the ground, so nothing can get up under the net. Some canes are cut up several times...but they never attempt to eat the leaves or the canes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It would have to be a deer, that was able to clip the cane, but not able to extract the morsel from the netting. We get winter damage to blueberry shrubs from rabbits, but they don't climb, so it can't be rabbits in your tree.

Tilly, when I lived in MD, the deer would trim my BBs like this until I put a frame up for netting. You could mix up an egg potion and drizzle it around to 'disinterest' deer. Someone mentioned using Arm and Hammer Carpet Deoderizer around the edges of their gardens-supposed to keep deer away from food and flowers. Of course, this needs to be reapplied after heavy rains.

Currently, I have white and black two ply plastic and mylar strips/streamers fluttering off posts and wires...have not noted any deer prunings this season.

Another deer repellent is hanging bars of soap around the plant. They don't like soap, especially Irish Spring!

If the branches are clean-cut, especially if they are cut at an angle, then it is a rodent. Rabbits are the most likely culprits. They characteristically leave the stems in pieces including leaves. When deer bite off branches, the tip is rough as if broken off, and the deer do not usually leave leaves and stems littering the ground. And you may think nothing could get under your netting, but you'd be surprised what a determined rabbit (esp. a youngster) will get through. Regular little Houdinis. Check out other recent posts for more suggestions on how to deter rabbits and deer.

I have the same problem with my blue berry bushes, turns out to be mice or moles you might find holes in the ground buy the plant, if not, don't rule out rabbits, small baby ones.
