| I have a few pluots (not bare root) that I put into the ground last winter. I have 2 fruit on my emerald drop and 0 fruit on my flavor grenade. However, on my 3-1, I have 40 splash and 2 geopride and 2 emerald drop. A friend of mine also planted a 4-1 and they have similar numbers, unbelievable splash numbers and only 2-3 on the others. Was at a nursery last weekend and saw the same, nothing on most of the other pluots but splash totally overloaded. Is this what others are seeing here in San Diego? Does it change year to year or are FG, ED, and Geopride light producers here? |

| From most fruit set to least on my 2 4in1 trees: Flavor Grenade All of mine bloomed more or less at the same time... i believe my Suprior/Alderman plums were also blooming...which are hybrid. I have no pure Japanese Plums in production yet... |

| Flavor Grenade and Dapple Dandy set extremely well for me. FG gets thinned at least 3x before harvest, 2x for DD. DD is a branch breaker if I don't lighten the fruit load. Flavor King seems to be a bit more spotty depending on the year. My FG and DD are more vigorous trees than my FK. All my trees are in ground. |

| Do you think I'll get enough chill hours for Dapple Dandy down here in San Diego? How is the eating quality of DD for you compared to the other pluots you have? |
|
| I don't much care for Dapple Dandy but others like it and it sets like crazy. Splash has always set well for me. Flavor Supreme is the hardest to set followed by Flavor King and Flavor Treat. In another year you'll be muttering about all the excess fruits on Flavor Grenade.....and others on your list. Flavor Grenade, Emerald Drop, and Dapple Dandy all require a lot of thinning time. The foliage is thick and the small fruit hides well. You'd almost think it sets more after you take it off. And the bigger the fruit gets the thicker it seems. If you think there is half what you want it's probably still too much. |

| Fruit- That is how i feel with my apricots...its like i thin like crazy, then when they size up i realize i wasn't nearly aggressive enough. Luckily the pluots are in whisky barrels (25 gallons?) and shouldn't get to out of control. Really looking forward to trying some of these fruits you have talked about. Just need some hot weather! 62F here today for a high temp :( |

| I live about 10 miles inland San Diego. We probably average around 300 chill hours. Splash sets like crazy for me. I have had 50 on year two, 200-300 on year three and four. Dapple dandy sets good for me too. I had about 10 in year two, 50 on year three, and 100+ on year four. My dapple dandy have been huge. People mistake them for apples on the tree. Flavor King and Emerald drop have about 10 each after one year. Hard to tell how well they will set when mature. Each one had 100's of blooms this spring. The flavor of the splash and dapple dandy have been a good sweet tart balance with the splash being a little sweeter.

| Thanks guys. Love this forum! Econ0003, I'm about 8 miles inland so I probably get the same weather as you. Which of your pluots have you liked the best as far as eating quality? |
|
| I prefer Splash over Dapple Dandy. I won't know about the Emerald drop and Flavor King until I try the fruit this year. |

| Dapple Dandy gets very little love on this forum, but I'm a huge fan. It will hold on the tree very well and gets better as it holds. Most of the DD that you find at the farmer's markets are picked way too early. I've had some ugly sunburned shrivelled ones that looked like hell but tasted like heaven. For me DD is a winner that I can count on. It should do fine in SD as well. |
