Bad idea for grape vine support?

What do you guys think for a less than ideal grapevine support? Also, will the feeler things from the vines girdle the leaves and other vine or should I prune off all the feelers that aren't near the stakes?

I would call it an umpire stand. On gramps farm there was a hay field we could use to play baseball. behind home plate there was a bartlet pear tree with a concord grape using it for an arbor. as a 10 year old I didn't think about how he pruned it. Games were played with as few as 7 kids, you needed a pitcher, catcher, batter, a couple fielders, and an umpire. In september the ump could sit in the tree high enough to see the whole field and eat tart grapes and sweet bartlets. We could only use the field after June hay was cut. As Paul Harvey would say here's the rest of the story. The infield was mowed by a reel push mower, the outfield by a new 1959 8n ford with a sickel bar. Uncle Bob built us a back stop now I know it was to have some fruit left. Thank you for your post, it got me thinking. I have a corn field that should go fallow for a few years and 3 and 5 year old granddaughters. there is an apple tree in one corner a good 300'from a window.Do you know where there is a good 8n?

The feeler things are more commonly known as tendrils, they won't harm leaves or vines. If you are going to use the fence for grape support, your starter trellis may work but a good breeze may lay it over.

I am planning on using the wood fence once it gets there. There is about 6 feet from the main trunk to the wood fence. I think it will have to do for now since I planted the vine without thinking it through all the way.

There's a several-year technique for developing a productive grape vine. The link provides a good overview of the process. I've always wanted to try it, because if you can prune up a good grapevine you can prune just about anything correctly.

ravenh2001, your story was charming! Thank you for sharing it.

Here is a link that might be useful: pruning/training a grape vine

It was a good story.

Thanks for the link. It is always hard to translate the book to how it actually looks.

Should I continue to prune off all secondary and tertiary shoots so that groats can focus on the primary I am trying to get the length of my fence? It has put out a ton of growth so far.
