Is this a borer?

I have a peach I planted 5 weeks ago. I just discovered what appears to be a hole and damage on the trunk and one branch.

Any ideas on what this could be? I poked in the hole a bit with a toothpick and didn't really "find" anything or come to any conclusions. Please help!

Whatever it is you don't want it; take a razor knife and cut it out, sterilizing the blade with a flame between cuts. Possibly a twig borer, but also may be a canker of some type. Be agressive, whatever damage you might do is no worse than that thing is doing.

Peach twig borer is common in the West, but uncommon in the Northeast. At least that's my understanding.

The appearance looks like early symptoms of canker to me.

Below is a fact sheet on canker.

Here is a link that might be useful: Peach Canker - Ohio State

I think you should see frass of some sort if its a borer. Plus I think its still early to see this damage, you'd be looking a borer from last summer. I've had them kill entire trees. Probably canker.

It looks like physical damage to me, the tree got jabbed/scraped by something. There is too much bark missing for it to be canker or a borer.

All the above comments appear to be for the trunk wound.

What about the final image where the branch is attached to the trunk? Looks different to me.

I would have thought it was physical damage before too, except that the tree has stakes around it and is netted in. Unless something got under and caused the damage? It's hard to believe that I wouldn't have noticed the damage a few weeks ago when I put the netting up, but it's always possible.

In my experience with lesser peach tree borers in cherries and plums (I'd say Rose of Sharon but that's a dry bush anyway) the wounds are totally dry. If they're not dry the borer didn't survive.
