My apple trees are about 5-6 years old, and this is the first year I have seen fire blight on them. See picture. Question: Is it worth the time to prune off all of the dead blighted branches, or do I just need to treat next year early? Unfortunately, I have learned today that my three varieties are all "highly susceptible" varieties: Fuji, Gala, and Jonathan. Ugh! Should I start over with the more resistant types if I don't want to use too many chemicals.

cut well-behind the fireblight now. At least 6 inches behind...As you say...chemical treatment is a dormant affair.

Scott, our resident FB expert says he fought a losing battle until he axed the worst offenders. Then control became much easier. Food for thought. But if this is your first FB, it seems early for the axe.
