Weird bug playing peekaboo on Florida grape vine!

I noticed this weird insect on my black Spanish grapes. There were a couple on each section of vine. What is weird is when you approach the vine they are on they duck to the other side. When you move your hand to the other side they keep moving to hide! What are these and will they insure my vine? I'm in north Florida and am pretty observant of my plants and up to now have only seen ants farming aphids.

Thanks for the help

Not a good thing to see on your grapevines. Glassy-Winged Sharpshooter. Carriers of the deadly Pierce's Disease. Contact your ag agent right away, to see if there is anything you can do at this point.

The hiding behavior you described is common to most leafhopper insects (including the Sharpshooter), they even do it during nymph stages.

Hoosier, Black Spanish is resistant to Pierce's disease.

I finger smash as many as 10 GWS a day on my 'Crimson Seedless' vine during the growing season. This is the second year in a row. Seems like they hang out in various locations in the neighborhood and then swoop in for a meal as needed. The vine is probably living on borrowed time at this point.

Oops, missed the cultivar, Scott. Yes, good choice. mrclint, GWS live in citrus orchards (as well as vineyards of course). So, if you've got citrus, you've got GWS.
