| So I bought a very ripe cantaloupe today. It was delicious by the way and there's still half of it in the fridge. I scooped out the seeds as I was cleaning it and thought "what if...". So I grabbed a few seeds and cracked them open with the front of my teeth. They had plump seeds inside. They taste good by the way, similar to a pumpkin seed. So I threw a bunch of the seeds in a glass of water and kept on filling it up and emptying the water and pulp fragments until it ran clear. They're drying on a linen towel now and will for a few days. While cooking dinner tonight I came across this blog and it's encouraged me to try it out. What have I got to lose apart from time? You'll have to find the various posts but she or he has charted it rather well. The end result was tasty apparently. http://thyme2gardennow.blogspot.com/2010/07/growing-supermarket-cantaloupe.html I've got what looks to be 80 or maybe 60 seeds. Even with a 65% germination rate I'm looking at a lot of plants. |

| I'm growing 8 different melons. I bought seed. I doubt I will ever buy more, no need. As each packet comes with way too many, and I will save seed. They probably will cross, but then I'll have a melon nobody else has. The plants need a lot of room forming large multiple branched vines. Melons are now forming. The challenge is going to be trying to figure out when ripe! |
