Tonytran, that is one beautiful peach! Please share how good it taste! I am in Georgia and some of my peaches have not even turned pink yet. They are all on the west side of my fence in my south facing backyard-but in time they will ripen! Again, you have one beautiful peach there. Enjoy!!!

You're cruising along good out in Omaha. Mine are not near that size yet. Is that yellow or white?

Tony thats a beaut! Can't wait to hear how it tastes. My peaches are at least a month away if not more. Mrs. G

Nice, even if it has that split pit look- the bane of early peaches.

Starks is not in the breeding business anymore, is it? They like to rename varieties out of patent, I think.

I don't think Starks was ever breeding, they always bought exclusive rights to other breeder works. Thats how Red Delicious took off, right?

I had my first peach yesterday, a Gold Dust. It wasn't fully ripe but it still tasted like heaven - bring on the peaches!!!

I picked my first few PF1 yesterday. They aren't bad, but aren't real sweet at ~10 brix and I'm looking forward to the later peaches. You can see a bug bite on the one in the front- Surround only provided partial protection.

Scott, read this.

Here is a link that might be useful: Stark bros breeding

I think that link confirms my point -- they are not doing the breeding themselves, they are just buying the "fruits" of other breeders.

The article mentioned their research and continuing Luther Burbank's work. I don't know what else that might mean if not some breeding research- testing varieties is breeding research, I think, even if you didn't do the crosses yourself.

But this may all be just semantics. My original point was that they used to seek out new varieties no yet patented to patent themselves but now wait for varieties to go out of patent and then rename them. It is very confusing to people who want to find out about the performance of specific varieties.

Frank,

This was supposed to be a miniature yellow patio peach tree. I over fertilized it about 7 yrs ago with Urea 43-0-0 and it got real big to 9 ft tall and 6 feet wide. It produced a lot real sweet peaches yearly. This past Winter, it got down to -16F and only about a third of the flowers bloomed. It is a good quality early season peach in my opinion. Sweet and Juicy,

Tony

We've picked a few Earlystar. Mostly split pits because so few on the tree. Earlystar was also quite a bit earlier than it should have been due to so few peaches.
