Nectarine tree with damage on trunk and yellowing leaves

This is the second year this tree has been in our yard. Last year it did well. This year I have noticed this on the trunk and leaves have turned yellow. We have had some real downpours of rain recently, but no weather patterns that differ significantly from last year's. Does anyone know what's going on, and how I can treat it?

That looks fatal due to girdling by the canker.

It looks more like weedwacker damage to me. The easiest way to kill a young fruit tree is with a weedwacker.
