Early 2014 Blueberry Report/Evaluations

I liked the raspberry/blackberry thread so why not start one for BlueBerries.

Southern Highbush:

Jewel - Huge plants almost 6 feet tall, very vigorous grower, huge (quarter sized) berries. Skin snaps when you bite into them. Brix in the upper teens when picked early, I let em hang an extra week.

Sweet Crisp - Young plants only produced about ~2#s of fruit. Super sweet, brix in the low 20s, skin that snaps when you bite it like a Nathans hotdog.

Northern Highbush:
Duke - Reliable producer of early tart berries. small fruit, lots of flavor brix in middle teens. Vigorious erect plants approaching 6 feet.

Northland - mounding bush type (half-high). Small berries with brix in the low 20s, superb wild blueberry flavor. This is my baking/jamming berry of choice.

Jersey - Huge plants approaching 5feet tall and wide. Loaded this year, more berries than leaves. Just starting to ripen.

Darrow - Large flat berries, with a wonderful tart flavor, very similar to Jewel. Brix right around 20. Vigorous and reliable producer.

Legacy, Liberty, 2 unknowns, Pink lemonade and Elliot are still ripening, and I haven't had a chance to taste them yet this year.

Overall the start of a great harvest. We've had a ton of rain this season, ~5" a month on average since April (normally (3.5-4"). I fertilized before bud break with holy tone, and once during flowering about a month later. I've now switched to using a teaspoon of Ammonium sulfate every 10 days or so with 2 gallons of water. Trying to push growth on some of my younger plants.

PH in my NYC BB patch, according to my last test in April of 2014 was 5.9ish. I use elemental sulfur in the spring and fall, about a cup per plant around the root zone.

So how are your Blueberries this year?

I don't know if mine count, since they're potted dwarf varieties that I overwinter in my garage.

I had significant tip death on my branches and it really hit the north sky blueberries badly. I had only a few flowers on one and a little more on the other. Very low yield. The Top Hats also had tip death but seemed to weather the winter better than the North Sky plants did. One has put out a nice yield. The other has always flowered well and put out very few berries even in good years, so I'm not surprised that it didn't put much out this year.

The plants looks nice! They will produce if you keep up what you're doing. Mine are too early for a report. i will report after harvest.

My blueberries are still rather small and less productive, but this year they turned a corner and started growing. I probably had about 8 pints total from 20 plants but considering I didn't get a half pint last year, I was happy. In a nutshell, I fixed a drainage problem from my original planting, sprayed all of the plants with lime sulfur to kill off fungal diseases, and used elemental sulfur to balance the pH. Those three changes have allowed my plants to almost double in size this year and start thriving instead of just surviving.

All of the my blueberry plants (except Sweetcrisp) made it through this last very cold winter without any damage. Even my two rabbiteye plants (Tifblue) survived unharmed and have fruited. The only blueberry with any cold damage was the Sweetcrisp, which resulted in no fruit but both Sweetcrisp plants continue to grow at a fast rate in their pots.

The flavor of the various blueberries was good overall but the Kabluey did have the consistently best-flavored berries. I believe it must be at least a partial southern highbush if not a full southern high bush because it has a different growth pattern and appearance from the other blueberry plants.

Kabluey (very good flavor)
Reka
Duke
Blueray
Rubel
Patriot (notably good flavor)
Bluejay
Bluecrop
Toro ((notably good flavor)
Pink Lemonade (not yet ripened)
Tifblue (not yet ripened)
Bonus - (did not fruit)
Sweetcrisp (did not fruit)
