Cats using small pecan tree as a scratching post.

My cats have been using one of my pecan trees as a scratching post. It's about 5" in diameter.

I put some chicken wire around it as soon as I noticed it last week, so they have stopped using it.

Should I put something on the wounds to help it heal?

No. Leave them be.

Cats killed bark on one apple tree. Just on one side, the upper side, on a tree that leaned a little. That tree is also about 5 inches diameter but they've been after it for yrs.
