I Am So Dense!

This year I found borers killing my Stella cherry, that seem to be flat-headed apple borers. At least, that's what they look like. So I kept wondering how did they get into the cherry tree? And now I have to take down two trees in two years, after the old apple tree died ...

DUH!

But I looked and looked, never saw any signs of borers on the apple, only the cherry, the way it oozes gum.

Now I have to worry where they'll hit next, and how to find them, and how to prevent them.

Steep learning curve. I've never had borers actually kill apple or anything but peach and that only happens if trees are weak. Most borers work up high enough that even if they girdle the trunk there's still trunk below to regrow the tree.
