I have a 2 year old apple tree that recently started developing cracks on the bark. Any thoughts on the cause and cure? (Also, I know my apple tree has CAR - can't really be avoided where I live.) Thank you very much!

That could be serious if the crack is all the way to the cambium. But it may just be surface cracks of no significance. I can't tell you the cause.

Seems to be a wide spread problem this year. I have it on some of my trees and I know of other people who have it as well. I believe it is stress cracking from extreme weather. My trees are already healing and I havent seen any long term negative affects as of now.
|
Sun scald caused by sun hitting the frozen trunk and causing the crack. If it is on the side that gets sun then you can be sure that is what caused the crack.

I have a lot of the same cracking on my apple and pear trees. Have also saw it on sassafras and maple trees. I thought it was from the extreme weather this winter until I found some cracks on this years scionwood growth. The good news is it hasn't hurt the trees growth. Here's a pic of cracks on a pear on this years scionwood. C:\Users\Rick\Pictures\Back40 2014\2014-07-02 7-2-14\7-2-14 017.JPG

greyphase: That looks a lot like hail damage. Any hail in your area this spring?

Yes fruitnut I did have a hailstorm on June 11. I first noticed the bark cracking on June 21. Here's another pic. C:\Users\Rick\Pictures\Back40 2014\2014-06-20 6-21-14\6-21-14 001.JPG
