Looks like an immature hickory or pecan nut

It's a hickory, and those yellow buds suggest to me that it's probably bitternut hickory, Carya cordiformis.
Edible, yes. Tasty, NO! - unless you like astringent things that will turn your mouth inside out, like green persimmons or unleached red/black oak acorns. Even the squirrels won't eat them except as a very last resort.
It's a shame, though, 'cause they typically have the thinnest shells of any of the hickories.
