My kiwis don't look good

Do these things need copious amounts of water or just more shade or do they just hate 100F temps? I have mine in morning sun, afternoon shade... They were just planted this spring and have been putting out some new growth... some leaves look burnt>? (gold color) and some new growth on one was crusty...

Water more? Pray for cooler temps?

shade cloth

OK...reading an old post someone mentioned shade cloth and misters...I'll have to pay more attention to them in the future. They must not care for 100F-103F temp we've had the last few days.

Wow Frank those temps are hot!I can't comment on the problem you are having as the hottest it normally gets here is I'd say max 90F.....And I find at that temp it is very uncomfortable. What variety of kiwi are you growing?

RE: My kiwis don't look good

Natasha, Andrey and ANANASNAYA...arguta...suppose to be very hardy.

Very hot throughout the midwest the past week or so.

RE: My kiwis don't look good

I would keep them pretty wet, as long as it isn't heavy clay that doesn't drain, but keep them at least moist, and maybe rig up some shade for them. This weather is extraordinary, so this isn't something you ordinarily would have to deal with. The fact that they're new is AND facing these temps and drought/dry air is the problem. They should come around once it gets back to normal, assuming it ever does get back to normal, I'm beginning to wonder...if this is the "new normal" well, we're screwed.

RE: My kiwis don't look good

I agree...if this is the new normal, then I've got to move further north.

RE: My kiwis don't look good

They will definitely crisp with those temps. Temporary shade of some sort and lots of water will help.
