What is up with my grape vine?

I am wondering if anyone can help? A couple of years ago I bought this Boskoop glory grape and initially it was in a tall, deep pot against this pergola, and performed great ... easily covering it in its first year. Whilst scouting for some winter pruning advice, everyone said I should get it in the ground, so last autumn I transplanted in a similar spot. The soil is good there, was prepared ahead with organic material, and is slightly clay rich. The site gets full sun all day.

This year, as you can see, it started great but over the last two months has just 'stopped' with the leaves slowly turning red/brown (almost like they do in autumn). I can't see any critters on it, and it has surely been far too dry for powdery mildew. It has got worse since these pictures, still very little upward growth with further reddening/browning leaves. Our winter, like most peoples, was very wet so it shouldn't have got dry after transplanting.

Any thoughts?

With a sideways closeup of two leaves and one nice looking stem of grapes. It is hard to tell what the overall look of the plant is. Other than you are in the UK, can you give us any help about your location? AL

Hi there,

I've attached another, and the first photo was the right way up! Plus, that nice looking bunch of grapes has now shrivelled and dried brown. I am on the south east coast of the UK - pretty sunny and mild as the UK goes!

Sometimes it's lack of nutrients in the soil. Make sure you dose it with an all around fertilizer to give it what it needs. If that doesn't work, you could have contracted some kind of disease. When ours show red, we know. We hit hard with fertilizer. But red blotches can be a sign of other things. Good luck to you.

Might be rust and the mottling of the leaves I got to question. Maybe some one can help with the mottling leaf problem because that is not right. Though mine did get that look once, I added iron, it went away.

I've had several different answers to this over a few forums, and no one is really sure! I've tried several things including spraying and feeding but you can see that it continues to worsen and has still put on no more growth, so I have drawn one conclusion as follows:

Last year = big pot = very happy
This year = ground = very sad

.... so I think the best thing to do is put it back in a big pot. So my question now is, should I replant it now .... Or wait until autumn (when it might be a lot sicker)? Should I prune it back and get rid of the sick growth?

I would leave it in the ground. All plants do better when planted in the ground. Grapes do take awhile to adjust and 1 season is not enough. Its starting to look more and more like rust. I would NOT take off the bad leaves( they will dropt) but I would spray it with fungicide. Actually it is good it dropped its small clusters of grapes the plant is to small yet. Keep watering it and don't get those leaves wet(no sprinklers I hope) Grapes like dirty dry leaves. Keep an eye on it, give it more water and no fert. Grapes can take some patience. Then in the fall, if you insist, transplant when dormant.

It needs potassium, and maybe something else. But for sure it needs nutrients. Poor baby.
