troubleshooting grafting problems

Anyone out there know of any resource like this? Everything I've ever seen only describes the process, and never the why behind each step, to say nothing of a "if you see such and such, next time do this" approach.

Or, maybe somebody could just help me understand why my numerous attempts to graft Morus nigra Black Beauty onto Morus alba rootstocks have all failed. I follow the basic guidelines, using rubber bands and parafilm, and my budding attempts all seem to "take", that is the bark of the scion and rootstock appear fused after a few weeks, but the bud always turns brown and dies. Is this a sign of buds that are too immature? A sign of incompatibility? (The trees I'm taking the budwood from are the same combination so I doubt this one).

Spring grafts with omega grafting tool have also all failed, the buds never coming out of dormancy, but appearing green and dried upon inspection.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
