Santa Rosa Plum

| I have a Santa Rosa Plum that has been in the ground for over 5 years and it hasn't borne any fruit to date. However, the Granny Smith Apple and Mid Pride Peach that are on opposite sides are going like gangbusters.
In the backyard, there are two Natchez Orange, a kumquait, and Snowy Crab Apple that are doing great too.
Just wondering if I have a sterile tree and it's time to yank and replace?
Thanks

Santa Rosa is a versatile tree and can be some what self fertile in dry conditions. Asian plums bloom early. Do you have hard frosts before during or after bloom. If not, you need to get another asian plum to cross pollinate to get fruit set.

My Santa Rosa plum is completely self fertile, but it took several years to start bearing fruit. Last year we had a wonderful crop, and made great plum jam. We had a similar crop this year. Monday I went out to pick the fruit for jam again, and found that someone (probably ground squirrels) had taken every single fruit. We were not amused. Rosefolly

A good pollinator for Sta Rosa Would be the Golden Japan cultivar (though it depends of the climate zone).

The rootstock may make a difference in how young Santa Rosa fruits. We have two trees. One bore fruit when young and the other did not. And can we assume that you get enough winter chill for good bloom? Santa Rosa has quite a low chill requirement, so unless you're right on the coast, you probably do. Do you spray with copper or another fungicide in winter? I think Santa Rosa is one of the less susceptible of Asian plums to brown rot, etc. but if you live in a humid area, that could be a factor. Spray when you spray your peach tree. Thanksgiving, Christmas and Super Bowl time recommended in our area. Copper/dormant oil is a typical choice for home growers. Try summer pruning this year to try to encourage fruiting next year.

Santa Rosa blooms very early. If you have freezing weather during bloom you won't have any fruit. This variety may not be suited to your area. Try Beauty. It's been a reliable producer here in western WA.
