Is it OK to plant raspberries in the fall (say, end of October), or is it better to wait until spring? Thanks for any info.

You can plant in the Fall in zone 8a, but I would do it soon so the plant can put out feed roots, before frost.
Come thought Columbia, S.C. & I can give you 10-30 plants of the low "dew berry" type of red raspberry. They bare good with minimal water & no fertilizer or weeding.
Shameful that I know that, but I have so many & so little time.

Thanks, jolj. Unfortunately, Columbia is a couple hours away, but I appreciate the offer. Maybe someone else on here can take you up on it. :)
