Planting a plum

Two months ago I purchased a small plum tree on sale (for about $4!) that is about two and a half feet above the top of the 5 gallon pot. I planted it in the pot in one of my raised beds intending to plant it in its permanent location. Now the weather has turned warmer and temperatures are above 90 degrees for the next week. I am finally ready to plant it but I wondered if it would be better to leave it in the pot in the ground until the temperature drops a little. Which is more damaging to have it stay in the pot or plant it in hot weather?
