Planting a plum

Two months ago I purchased a small plum tree on sale (for about $4!) that is about two and a half feet above the top of the 5 gallon pot. I planted it in the pot in one of my raised beds intending to plant it in its permanent location. Now the weather has turned warmer and temperatures are above 90 degrees for the next week. I am finally ready to plant it but I wondered if it would be better to leave it in the pot in the ground until the temperature drops a little. Which is more damaging to have it stay in the pot or plant it in hot weather?

I'd advise holding it till weather cools and gets wetter.

Make sure your watering is sufficient...I'd even advise soaking the pot once or twice weekly in a larger bucket. Often trees are in some crappy soil that becomes water repulsive when it dries out.

Thank you. I have kept it watered and the weather has cooperated this summer. Its been pretty rainy. Unfortunately some kind of bug got to it and nibbled on the leaves. But it seems to be doing OK. I dug the hole and it will go into very good soil right next to a compost pile!
