 o
what prep, if any, for grafting next spring

I have plum, peach, apple, and pear trees that the scion didn't survive last winters 2 months of below zero weather. However, the rootstocks are doing fine and I have been pruning them to a single sprout.

I also have a few where I have sprouts from the trunk a foot or two above the original graft.

I am assuming time to fruit will be less for successful grafts on well established 2 or 3 year old rootstocks vs. just replanting. Is this correct? i assume all the grafting activity occurs next spring.

I do have other trees to provide the grafts.

So ... are my assumptions valid?

is there anything i should be doing now?

as always thx for advice.

if anyone ever needs expert advice on stone or quartz countertops I'm the guy to ask.

You can also bud graft starting pretty soon. If you bud graft now you get off to a better start then a spring graft. the bud will get all connected now, then in the spring you cut the tree or branch off right above your graft and the new branch grows from your bud. Spring grafting has to get settled in before growing. But the main advantage is you can graft like 3 buds to improve odds of success. But if all 3 fail you still can spring graft.

I graft on water sprouts, for the most part, so favor the ones I intend to graft by cutting away competition, but for your small fledglings you probably should leave everything just to feed the roots.

The more upright and exposed to sun the faster it will grow.
