| Scott, How is the Foster peach turn out this year for you? My graft did real well and hopefully next year I have the chance to taste it. Tony |

| Tony, my Foster is recovering from bad borers and its also in the squirrel travel lane so I didn't get any this year. The borers I think I finally solved by smearing tanglefoot at the base of every tree (after digging out dozens of worms by hand). I don't see any frass piles at the bases anymore and the Foster tree is starting to put on good growth again. Along with the squirrels I have found Foster gets a lot of stinkbug action. In general the older peach varieties did less well this year, my St. John mostly rotted although I did get a taste or two to remember why I haven't chopped it down. The Early Crawford was ripening in too-wet weather and got mushy on the inside by the pit. I don't think my tree is in fact Early Crawford anymore, the fruits are too small compared to the original. My guess is it is a seedling of EC. Eagle Beak all rotted yet again. Sanguine Tardeva was a bright spot among the heirlooms, it was extremely sweet and flavorful and didn't rot so much. Right now the O'Henry are just starting to ripen, they are truly excellent and every bit as good as Red Baron (also similar flavor profile). Scott |
