Either is fine but the rabbits need wider spacing. Personally I would go the second route as the rabbits will out compete the SHB. The rabbits have a pretty darn big root spread compared the to SHB.

If I go the second route, how far apart should I plant them?
This is my first attempt with SHB.

Rabbits need at least 7ft but I would go 10 feet between if you can because they will make a hedge at 7ft spacing. I tried 6ft and it was too close after 3 seasons. So far my experience with SHB is it depends on the variety. Some are as wide as they are tall. Emerald for example is 6ft by 6ft right now while some varieties are taller than wide and some wider than tall. I would say 7-8ft spacing if you can do it. I like to be able to walk around my plants come picking/pruning time, not reaching into a jungle. It's up to you but no less than 6ft.

I think Blueboy is spot on the spacing for the rabbits. The SHB can be grown 6ft apart for specimen plants or as close as 30" mine are 4' apart and pruned to form a hedge of sorts.

More bushes planted closer yields more berries than less bushes spaced further apart....it is why the commercial guys space so close. They are very adaptable though so you are free to amend the spacing as it suits your wants and needs.
