little mango shedding new growth

Hi,

I have a little mango that I started from seed last year. It's done quite well but has never had more than four leaves at a time. It was over-watered this summer after it was re-potted and I managed to save it but it's main leaves went brown and fell off after two new leaves grew. New growth started after that but we had a bit of a cold spell and the new-main-leaves went brown and the new growth fell off. Now it's the end of summer and about to get really cold [I live in Ottawa] so its "inside time" will start - I've been reading up on how to trim back the leaves to encourage new foliage growth but I wanted to double-check here to see if I was correct in thinking I should chop the top off... any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have never grown Mangos. I know you said that it had been over watered but in this pic the medium looks over dry. I would trim the brown part of the leaves only.

You could get one to do well,even grow indoors in Canada if you kept it under double 40 watt fluorescent lights. A 4 bulb set up would be much better. It's their tropical heritage to do better then say- growing apples in artificial lights.
I guess those ways to grow pot indoors could apply here..I never have,but from what I see on the news- they would work great!

Thank you both for your suggestions!

1. @goodground: They're supposed to be watered every second day in the summer, this was it's dry-day :] as for the leaves - once they're brown they're useless?

2. @stanofh: Yes, I hadn't thought of putting it under lights yet - it seemed to like being in natural light all last summer... I'll try that for sure.
