Just planted last spring 2 NC-1s and one each of Sunflower and Mary Foos Johnson. They're just a few feet apart from each other. I think they've done well, but some small black dots have appeared on just a few leaves. I can roll them right off with my finger. There's also the problem that's obvious in the picture, Is it a nutritional deficiency? A fungus? Some articles say paw paws become vulnerable to fungi when nutrition is inadequate, but it's now 8/29, kind of late for fertilizer. Are the dots an insect I have to spray against? should I apply some fertilizer? It's 8/29, kind of late for fertilizer. Should I spray an antifungal? Should I remove the affected leaves? Only Sunflower is badly affected, but there are few black dots on the others. Everything was going so well. What should I do?

Coming on to the end of the season. They've pretty well done their job for the year. I see no reason to worry - or to do anything to them.

I agree, it's no problem. My pawpaws get the same spots every year and it looks like the same tar spot fungus that hits the silver maples as their leaves begin to fade. It's too bad beause pawpaws have such a nice fall color without the spots.

Hello, lucky p and bangstrom -- Thanks for looking at the pics. OK, I won't worry.. I thought it was weird because the yellowing leaf (which fell off when I touched it yesterday) was also sort of turning black around the veins, as are a few other leaves still firmly attached. Most of the dots are stationary, but a few rub off, so looks like they're eggs. They come off easily, so that's what I'm doing. These little paw paws sure are pretty, though. I will keep you abreast of significant developments. Bernard-in-Ohio
