I bought 2 strawberry plants back in May along with a large planter, I figured I'd let them start in there and then transplant them in the ground once I had a spot for them. Well now it's the end of August and they're still in their planter! I know I can't put them in the ground now, so what are my options? I read that you can keep them inside and let go dormant to bring back in Spring. There are several runners which I'd hate to cut off but I guess that's what will end up happening. They're so lush and full of potential for next year, I'd hate to just let them die! Thanks in advance!

Of course you can put them in the ground now. It's the best time for it.

Really? I assumed with the summer ending and fall coming up they wouldn't do so well...

in your zone the roots need to establish themselves before the plant goes dormant or it will just dry out and die.

In fall, they'll put out a good root system before going dormant, a couple months of growing weather. Then in spring they should be ready to go. Keep them well watered while growing and mulched after they go dormant.
