strawberries not producing!

after 10 yrs. I decided it was time to rejuvenate the strawb. patch. So, last fall, I set aside the runner "babies", tilled everything else under, along with aged manure, replanted the babies about 12" apart.
Now, the patch is totally filled in with more runners and SO MANY plants, yet very FEW strawberries. The variety is "Quinalt" and in the past, the berries were large. The berries are marble size and some are mis-shapen, not the big beauties I had in the past. Very disappointing after going through all the work to revamp the patch! The plants look really healthy, but maybe they put all their energy into making new runners and that is why there are so few berries? What should I do now?

Pinch off the flowers and berries and wait til next summer. Plants are too busy setting roots and runners to be able to fruit well.

Yeah, as the old saying goes, wait 'til next year. They should fruit well, depending of course, on the weather.

should I also remove some of the plants? It has filled in to a thick mat, as it was before I tilled under. I thought maybe there were too many plants, and that was why the fruit was small.

oh, and is there another variety you would suggest? Quinalt produce all summer, which is nice, but they do not keep well AT ALL, and they don't have the "classic" red strawberry look, because they have to be picked when still somewhat white (the ones that are red are too ripe to eat, they are literally rotting) I know looks aren't everything.... but is there another everbearing variety that would be good for Zone 4/5?

thank you for your suggestions!

It's not my region, but I've heard good things about Seascape for the W coast.
