When do plums ripen in the northeast?

We have two large plum trees on our property that were neglected and haven't borne in many years. If I remember correctly (not a sure thing), one is a Japanese variety and the other is a prune plum

This year one of them (looks like it might be the Japanese plum) has some fruit on it--a nice surprise. Some appear to be purple or heading for purple, and the others are yellow. I'm wondering when they should be picked.

The other tree is under heavy attack by Japanese beetles. The leaves are just about turned to lace. This is a surprise too, but an unpleasant one.
