Mealy Braeburn apple

I brushed against the tree and knocked off a nice-sized apple. It had only a few red speckles but I thought I'd taste it anyway (the first off this 2-yearold tree).

Well, it definitely wasn't green. Had a mild flavor and little of the sharpness I enjoy in grocery store Braeburns. And it was mealy.

I'm in central California and this apple shouldn't have been ready for several months.

Why do apples gt mealy?

Thanks,

gary

Mealy usually means over ripe. But I suppose it could be the heat. I grew it in TX a long time ago. It didn't seem to handle the heat very well but I don't remember if mealy was the issue. Just got rid of it and didn't try again.

Thanks, FN. You could be right about it not handling heat well, the Granny Smiths next to it are still hard, not ripe, and not mealy, though it's a much older tree. Maybe I'll give it one more year.
