Question regarding Cherry Tree

I'm new to the forum and appreciate any advice. I am in Zone 3 to 4, my soil is old river bottom (rocky, no clay, limited topsoil layer). I had a landscaper plant a cherry tree last year but it didn't make it through the winter - I think it was trampled by a moose since the trunk was split when the snow melted away. I want to put in another cherry - prefer low maintenance and sour fruit - for baking. I'd like some recommendations and what the best time to plant is (I'm hoping early fall).

I'd also appreciate any other suggestions on edible fruit bushes you have - we planted raspberries, sea buckthorn, gooseberry, wild currant, serviceberry, buffaloberry, and bush apricot last fall - the last two didn't survive the winter.

Thanks!
