What is destroying my Blackberries and Raspberries

Hi All,

My summer raspberries were untouched by bugs/birds, however my fall berres and blackberries are getting ruined by something(See photo). There is usually a soft spot on the blackberry fruit where the lobes have been ruined. Raspberries are similar, but the one pictured, the damaged area has kind of dried up and turned black. I have noticed my strawberries are having a similar issue with one spot of the fruit becoming soft and sunken. This is only happening right has the fruit ripens. I am not sure if this is insect or bird damage. Any thoughts?

Thanks!
Ron

Probably SWD, see below.

Here is a link that might be useful: SWD

yeah, probably that new Asian pest, dissect the fruit and see if you see the worms in it. They practically are in everything now adays, eat the fruit like I do for a little extra protein.

Salt water bath or refrigerating/freezing will cause the fly larvae to come to the fruit surface or go to the surface of the container.

The flies would be noticeable on or near the fruit.

ugh! I was hoping you would say something other than SWD, but deep down, I figured that is what it was. What is the best way to manage these pests in berries? I will do some dissecting of the fruits to look for the larvae. How big are they...will I be able to see them with my eye?

Thanks!
Ron

SWD I trapped some on my strawberry bed this year in SW Nebraska. First time out here.

Yes, they are plainly visible to the eye, the size of a small grain of rice with movement. I have found it easier to do the bath or chilling rather than dissection, but all those methods will work.

See the recent swd/grape forum thread for more tips.

Visibly damaged fruit can take 2 to 13 days from infestation,
so very tiny larvae can be inside good-looking fruit and would not show in a chilling test or be very hard to see in a dissection test.

At least with blackberries, there is a good contrast ratio (off-white larva against black background) for viewing.

With raspberries, a good quick test is to glance at any berry which is at all soft and check if it has a cap-full of liquid. If it does, the taste will probably be impacted. You can see a pic of this in my post about 1/3 of the way down in this thread.

Well, it has been officially confirmed. I looked in a raspberry which looked infected and found a small, tiny thread like larvae. What has everyone been doing to fight this pest? Spraying? Netting? Need to plan for next year.

Thanks!

They only affect my Fall varieties, so it's not that big a deal to me. As long as the berry isn't leaking juice, I just eat it anyway.

For what it's worth, our raspberry patch was infested with SWD last summer, but so far, this year, no sign of them. It must have been the long, cold winter that did them in. I have been careful not to compost fruit or anything that might attract fruit flies.

It's worth plenty to get a year off from this pest; good luck next year.
