Is this sooty blotch on my apples?

Hello, just wandering in from the tree forum.

I have an apple tree which was supposed to be a dwarf. At least it is really an apple tree. For the first year I have a decent number of fist sized apples on it. Trouble is they all have these spots. Google makes me think it is sooty blotch but I am not an expert so I thought I should ask.

Otherwise the tree looks pretty decent save for repeated prunings as it is not the dwarf the spot calls for. Earlier in the year I thought it might be coming down with fireblight as some of the new growth was shriveling up but that seems to have gone away just like on the despised Bradford the previous owners left me.

Other side of the same apple.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Sooty blotch it is.

Thank you both. Now I can use the google and I guess treat with some fungucide next year. I hear these are still edible but man they're not very appealing.

FWIW I made it the whole year with no bug spray or anything on the fella.

And don't overlook the flyspeck.

Rub them with water and a nylon pad and rinse and they will look much more appealing- it takes quite a few fungicide aps to produce apples free of summer fungus most years in humid climates. Most people I work with prefer to scrub a few and use the rest for cooking or feeding to the less squeamish.

If you want to put down Captan every couple weeks during July and August you can probably get nearly pristine fruit. I use other materials with this schedule (did the final spray last week) and it works well. 4 extra sprays for cosmetic improvement. Created beautiful peaches as well.

Harvestman you called it. I have cleaned the apple and it looks much better. Now I can even see the flypeck lol. You called it we had a slightly cool early summer with the heat and humidity returning the last couple weeks. The tree is in quite a bit of a 'U' on a slope so it is not exposed to much wind. Nothing outlandish weather wise this summer so I bet this is going to be par for the course.

Since these clean so well I might worry more aboit the flyspeck next year. Or maybe I will treat for both but not go crazy with the anti fungal.

What do you think, another week or two to let the remainder ripen more?

As far as any labels I've read, the fungicide that works for one works for the other and the timing is about or exactly the same.

As far as ripening, go by taste more than color, which is not a reliable ripening indicator. Your tongue will tell if it is still a bit tart and starchy, or tending to bland and mealy. It might be at pie stage right now and fresh eating a week later. I wouldn't mess with the flyspeck and sooty blotch, you can eat them both as they are harmless.
