I just wonder if anyone plants anything in the orchard. There should be plenty room between the trees. But this makes mowing difficult. Just wonder.

This is kind of a permaculture approach: using the wisdom of nature to make our lives easier and healthier. In nature, there is always biodiversity. There is no orchard of only Red Delicious apple trees in blocks in nature. There are many important functions that other plants can do to help the orchard. Nitrogen fixing plants add natural nitrogen fertilizer. Many other plants bring up other minerals from the sub soil. Like comfrey, when you cut the leaves and put them on the ground, they add all of those minerals. In addition, biological diversity will add a wide variety of microbiology, so that no one disease or pest will wipe out the orchard. Many plants drive away pests as well. Some will bring in pollinators just before your fruit tree blooms, so you will have more pollinators. John S PDX OR

I allow chives, nasturtiums, arugula, cilantro and violas to grow wild around my fruit trees. I also use tight spacing on fruit trees to help control size. Planting other harvest-able plants around fruit trees is pretty common, you can search on "living mulches" and "food forests" to get some more ideas.
