Canary melon - Is this a female flower?

This is my first time growing canary melons.
Noticed this on one of the vines today. Looks like a female flower, but there aren't any male flowers yet.
Sorry I couldn't get a good closeup of it.

Yes, that's a female flower. Needs to be pollinated by a male flower, you can do that yourself with a Q-tip if you don't trust the bees. You'll probably need 6 weeks or more from now to get ripe fruit...

acorn922, I find it strange that you have female flowers appear before any male flowers. From my experience I have always had male flowers appear many days even weeks before females showed up. But I hear that is not always the case with all varieties and I am sure weather may somehow influence as well. You don't have your local stated.....It's winding down here for the season being a more than normal cool year. I can't imagine getting fruit to ripen this time of year with the shorter days and cooler nights. What variety are you growing? I grew 2 this year tweety, and an accidental ebay find. Tweety are a really good very sweet but with little flavor hybrid (I prefer muskmelon flavor). The ebay find was supposed to be a north Dakota giant but instead grew a bunch of 5-6 Lb footballs with the flavour of a very bland store bought honey dew.
don555 how is the weather out there? I have a very good friend who lives in Calgary and he sent me a photo of his back yard and his homemade greenhouse covering his tomatoes just covered in snow! Yuck!

Thanks for the replies.
A follow up.
Yup, that was a female flower and luckily the male flowers caught up and blossomed at the same time. I was able to hand pollinate it and it seems to be growing. Don't know the variety.

Does the plant not put out secondary roots like pumpkins? I haven't seen any.

I'm in Hawaii, so it's still hot.

Well I am very jealous right now(Hawaii), we just had our first frost last night signaling an end to melon season. Can you update on the progress of your melons with photos?
I have not seen any melon variety or watermelon variety lay down any roots. I have only seen various squash, pumpkin and cucumber root along the vine.
