On blackberries the soon to be floricanes want grow new roots to support next years crop but prune down to handle possible have few berries not full crop. I moved 36 spouting last winter not one berry this summer I dug new hole first then dug up sprouts roots and soil planted.

If I understand correctly, you want to transplant the full cane and have it produce this fall. right? No. not possible you aren't taking very much root with it. Think of it like this. a normal productive plant has as much below the ground as above. Look at the imbalance of transplanting.

Hey All...just to clarify, i wanted to transplant a full cane which is summer bearing, some are everbearing...but i plan on pulling all my Navajo blackberries out, roots and all and transplanting once they go dormant as that prevents shock and doesn't interfere with the growth cycle....some raspberries as well...i'm not expecting any fruit this year as i'm waiting until all harvests are done and dormancy sets in......i did it last year to great avail

If you do not expect any fruit, then why do you want to transplant full canes? The canes can be 8' or taller.

The proper way is to cut the canes to short, or even very short. So the roots you dig can support the plant. Next year, the plant can send out very strong new canes again.

If you keep the full cane now, the plant would be stressed....

I'm giving these plants to a neighbor or 2 so they don't have to wait 2 years for a summer bearing variety to produce fruit......i understand everything that's been said about roots supporting full plants etc.....either way they are coming out, a shame to waste a perfectly good cane ready to fruit next spring

I doubt if would fruit, but since they sprout so many it can't hurt to try. Just try taking as much root as possible,

I've seen full-sized transplanted Triple Crown blackberry plants fruit the following year.
