Hey All....i have gotten overcrowded with all the suckers that came up this spring and are now plants in themselves....i have some mature plants 5-7 foot tall some that i want to give away because of overcrowding and i want to change varieties around by adding some new potted plants i have that are growing, i have bought many on Ebay in the spring and fall that i guess were growing and they were bare rooted in moist medium to ship......however i want to transplant some of these mature plants without cutting them down if possible so they will get a full harvest.....last year i removed many plants in November once the temp went down below 4o degrees and plants went into dormancy, and replanted the in new beds and they grew phenomally.........i hear you can yank raspberries anytime by severing the root from mother plant and hydrating immediately, then plant and they will take. any feedback on this issue as my everbearing's are still growing and fruiting all at the same time now with about another month of growing before a frost may come in an stop growth for the season, i need to thin the herd....make room for other cultivars thanx

If I understand correctly, you want to transplant the full cane and have it produce this fall. right? No. not possible you aren't taking very much root with it. Think of it like this. a normal productive plant has as much below the ground as above. Look at the imbalance of transplanting.

Hey All...just to clarify, i wanted to transplant a full cane which is summer bearing, some are everbearing...but i plan on pulling all my Navajo blackberries out, roots and all and transplanting once they go dormant as that prevents shock and doesn't interfere with the growth cycle....some raspberries as well...i'm not expecting any fruit this year as i'm waiting until all harvests are done and dormancy sets in......i did it last year to great avail

If you do not expect any fruit, then why do you want to transplant full canes? The canes can be 8' or taller. The proper way is to cut the canes to short, or even very short. So the roots you dig can support the plant. Next year, the plant can send out very strong new canes again. If you keep the full cane now, the plant would be stressed....

I'm giving these plants to a neighbor or 2 so they don't have to wait 2 years for a summer bearing variety to produce fruit......i understand everything that's been said about roots supporting full plants etc.....either way they are coming out, a shame to waste a perfectly good cane ready to fruit next spring

I doubt if would fruit, but since they sprout so many it can't hurt to try. Just try taking as much root as possible,
